Yvonne Maller served as Dean of the Learning Resource Center from 2003-2007.  She also acted in many other capacities at Sacramento City College during her 22 year tenure. Yvonne died January 28 after a long battle with cancer. Her colleagues at SCC and throughout the Los Rio District remember her dedication, strength, and quiet courage with affection and gratitude.

Yvonne began her career at Sac City as an Instructional Assistant in the English as a Second Language Department in 1985. In spring 1990 Yvonne was hired as the Tutorial Services Specialist in the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center. At this time technology was in its early stages at SCC. As the Tutorial Services Specialist, Yvonne took the lead in bringing technology into the Tutoring Program. She acquired a software system and hired a consultant who custom-designed a recordkeeping system for tutoring. She also played a key role in providing computer access to students who came into the Learning Center.

In 1993, Yvonne was promoted to Coordinator of the SCC Tutoring Center. In this role she converted the prerequisite skills assistance course from an audiovisual format to computer-assisted instruction. In addition, she coordinated the tutoring budget for the tutoring centers on campus while supervising tutoring in the LRC. She also helped design the Tutoring department of the new LRC and coordinated the move of the division to the new building.

In fall 1997 Yvonne accepted an assignment as Coordinator of the California Virtual College and relocated to ARC for a few years. As CVC Coordinator she expanded the distance education program, helped steer and develop distance education issues, oversaw resources and training for faculty who were moving to online instruction, and co-authored the district distance education strategic plan.

Returning to SCC in 2003, Yvonne took on the responsibilities of acting Dean of the Learning Resources Division, becoming permanent in 2005. In this role she showed her skill at analyzing and improving delivery of LRC services, advocating for division resources, seeking in-depth solutions to division issues, and arbitrating the conflicting needs of students and the institution.  She was well known and loved for her ability to manage with empathy and understanding and her gift for collegiality.  LRC staff always found an open door and a listening ear, and they drew inspiration from Yvonne's tenacity and courage in the face of difficult circumstances.

In her many years at SCC, Yvonne devoted time to many endeavors, including several years as President of the Association of California Colleges Tutoring and Learning Assistance, long-term membership on the District Education Technology Committee, Academic Senate representation, and membership on numerous campus committees, including the SCC Curriculum Committee, the Learning Resource Committee, the Honors and Awards Committee, and the Information Technology Committee.

Through the many responsibilities Yvonne undertook during her 20 years at SCC, she touched the lives of many students, helping them achieve their educational goals while also helping to bring the college into the 21st Century with technology. Yvonne served Sacramento City College loyally and gracefully. Her career was a tribute to the value of education. She will be greatly missed by her many colleagues and friends.
