Get
Involved in Collection Development 
The main purpose of the materials in the Learning Resource Center is to
support the curriculum at SCC. Faculty expertise is a vital part of collection
building and weeding (removing outdated materials). Here’s how you can get
involved:

- Collection Weeding
Collection Building
- Keep a running list of titles that support the learning needs of your
students.·
- Form a departmental library committee to gather requests.
- Prioritize lists of requests according to student’s needs. Available funds
must be spread across the curriculum and may not cover all of your suggestions.
- The librarians generally request departmental lists in the spring,
but you may send requests (catalog pages, printouts, email) to your librarian.
Or use the online
request form or the suggestion boxes in the LRC.
- Invite your librarian to a department meeting to discuss collection concerns.·
- Visit the library to survey the holdings in your subject areas.
- Peruse issues of journals in your subject area or use Library Journal,
Booklist, and Choice to find titles. Use publisher's catalogs
or web sites and online bookstores.
- Notify your librarian of new topics in your curriculum that require additional
library support.
Media

Browse media
vendor's websites to find media titles in your discipline.
Reserve Books
- Donate your desk copies of required textbooks to the reserve collection
to make these materials available for your students.
- Email Yolanda Escobar to request that the library purchase a textbook
for reserve.
- Use LOIS, the online library catalog to obtain a list of books ready on
reserve for your courses.
Collection Weeding
- Plan a weeding session, on your own or with your colleagues. You can
weed for Flex credit all year! Contact Mary Ann Robinson (558-2377) to set
a time and get instructions.
- As you weed, note what’s new in your areas and make a list of titles or
topics you would like the library to add or update.
