Readings in Cultural Democracy

Sacramento City College is putting into practice a philosophy that recognizes and respects the existence of diverse cultures.  It is focused on transforming behavior to celebrate the richness found in every culture.  The Cultural Democracy Initiative website describes the Cultural Democracy Initiative and lays out a strategy to achieve the personal growth and institutional evolution that will help bring Cultural Democracy to SCC.

Personal and institutional growth takes place through workshops, continuing conversations, dialogues on institutional policy and practice, professional development activities, and through reading and sharing key books and media.  This website provides links and citations for selected books, articles, and media recommended by participants in the Cultural Diversity Initiative at SCC.  Please note that this list does not aim to provide comprehensive coverage, but rather to share selected key resources discovered by Cultural Democracy participants.

Books in this list may be held at SCC or at another college in the district.  In-district loans are readily available through LOIS, the library catalog.  Articles are often available through the library databases and accessible from off campus with a student access card or employee ID card and a library PIN.   Contact the library reference desk for assistance, 916-558-2461.

“If you can show me how I can cling to that which is real to me, while teaching me a way into the larger society, then and only then will I drop my defenses and my hostility, and I will sing your praises and help you to make the desert bear fruit.”

- Ralph Ellison
