Library Services
Adaptive Technology:
The LRC offers two adaptive work stations equipped with Kurzweil, Jaws and
Dragon Naturally Speaking software. The second floor also has a magnifier
to assist vision-impaired patrons.
Computer Access:
There are computers on the first and second floor of the LRC for use by patrons
and by members of the community. The computers on the second floor are provided
primarily for the research needs of SCC students. They can be used to search
the library catalog and electronic databases or to access the Internet. Fee-based printing is
available.
Electronic Databases:
The library subscribes to several electronic research databases (much in full-text)
from a variety of sources. Students can access these databases from any computer
with Internet access with their student ID number and password.
Electronic Reserves:
Students can access some
of their course readings through the LOIS library catalog using their
student ID and password. Adobe
Acrobat Reader is required to view items in PDF format. We cannot provide
everything electronically, so you will need to check the catalog for your
course to see what is available online. To check for electronic resources,
look in LOIS for your course either
by course name or instructor name. If any of items show the phrase “Click
on Title for Electronic Copy” then click on the title. You will be asked for
your student ID number and password before the document opens. For more
information, refer to the FAQs.
Instructional Media:
The Instructional Media and Academic Computing Department provides access to
non-print library resources, audio-visual equipment, two computer labs, and
an electronic classroom. Students must have a current Student Access Card to
check out media materials. Computer labs are available for academic purposes
to currently enrolled students. Instructional Media Resources include DVDs
and videos (over 6,000 programs on a variety of subjects), 10 viewing
stations, and a small group viewing room. Academic Computing Resources
include a lab in LRC 144 which provides access to 40 PC stations (including
two Adaptive Computer Station) and a second lab B-152 which contains 64 PC
stations (including one Adaptive Computer, and two Express Stations). All of
the computers offer Internet access and the MS Office Suite and are
available to currently enrolled SCC students only.
Interlibrary Loan:
Students may request that any circulating item available at one of the other
Los Rios campus libraries be sent to SCC. The student may
then check out that item for the normal circulating period, usually 3 weeks.
For books that are not available in the Los Rios Community College District, the library staff must place an interlibrary loan request with another library. The originating library determines the shipping and handling charges as well as the loan period. Please contact the Circulation Desk (558-2301) with as much identifying information as possible (ILL form) when you place your request. Interlibrary loan forms are also available on the second floor of the Learning Resource Center at the Circulation Desk.
Library Catalog (LOIS): Students can access the catalog from campus or remotely. They can request books from other Los Rios libraries, place holds on books currently checked out (except for Reserve books), and renew the books they have checked out (one time only online).
Printing/Photocopying:
Printing at SCC is available from all computer stations on a pay-per-print
basis. Students can use their student ID card as a print card. A
separate print card may also be purchased on the first and second floor of
LRC.
Reference:
The reference desk is located on the second floor of the LRC. It is staffed
with librarians who can offer assistance in locating specific information
or with any step of the research process.
Reserve Collection:
The Reserve collection is located behind the Circulation desk on the second
floor. The materials in this collection (textbooks, supplementary readings
and other materials made available by the instructor) can be checked out for
a limited time – 2 hours, 1 day, 3 days, or 1 week.
Special Collections/Archives:
