SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGEThe Cosmetology program is designed to meet the practical and technical requirements established by the California Board of Cosmetology. Successful completion of the program enables students to apply for the licensing exam administered by the Board of Cosmetology. Passing the exam is necessary to practice cosmetology in California. Students spend 1600 hours in the program (8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday thru Friday for three semesters). The program includes all phases of basic and advanced hair styling, haircutting and shaping, thermal pressing, hair coloring, make-up, manicuring, facials and scalp treatment. Related instruction includes basic chemistry, physiology, electricity, professional products, retail selling and salon management. Supplemental training is available for those who have out -of-state cosmetology licenses or students who have completed the SCC program but have not accumulated the minimum required 1600 hours.
Career Opportunities: Cosmetologists are employed in every community as hair stylists, manicurists, estheticians, factory representatives, and apprentices. Employers may include beauty salons, department stores, hospitals, manufacturers and the entertainment industry (television, motion pictures, theatre, etc.).
