Variable Topic courses are no longer posted on the TCA. In their place, a note is
included on the TCA describing UC credit granting policy for these types of courses.
The note appears under the appropriate department on ASSIST and on the first page
of the TCA paper copy. The policy calls for all campuses to give credit for these
courses after a student has been admitted at UC. This is because the information
required to make a determination on the transferability of these courses usually
is not available until that time. Credit is granted only if a UC evaluator determines
that the content of the course is transferable. The note reads:
Variable Topics Courses
These courses are also called "Independent Studies ", "Special Studies
", "Special Topics", "Internships ", etc. Credit for variable
topics courses is given only after a review of the scope and content of the course
by the enrolling UC campus. This usually occurs after transfer and may require recommendations
from faculty. UC does not grant credit for variable topics courses in Journalism,
Photography, Health, Business Administration, Architecture, Administration of Justice
(Criminology) or Library Departments because of credit restrictions in these areas.
