Academic Study Skills for Student-Athletes

 

Purpose:

    This class is designed to assist the student-athlete in acquiring basic study skills and work habits to gain success in the classroom. The class is held in South Gym 144 and students have options for enrollment depending on their academic load.

Students can enroll in .5 unit and would be required to complete 27 hours in the lab, which averages 1 1/2 hours per week. Students can enroll in 1 unit and would be required to complete 54 hours in the lab, which averages 3 hours a week. Finally, third year students can enroll in HS 1000 which is a zero unit class, and come to the lab as needed.

   

Additional Information:

    The class is a lecture /lab course that will address important topics as proper study techniques, time/stress management, test-taking strategies, and proper etiquette in the classroom.  Two grade checks will be completed throughout the semester, and students will see the academic counselor at least once to update their Education Plan.

    In Sport 90, students are given daily reminders of important deadlines that apply to them such as Financial Aid dates, AA application deadlines, Four Year College Transfer application deadlines, Scholarship deadlines and enrollment appointment dates.

Sport 90 will also provide study groups and tutoring to students in English and Math. This class is a requirement for ALL student-athletes every semester. It is a credit/ no credit class. It does not apply to an AA degree. Students must enroll in a specific class section. Orientation begins the first week of the semester.

    There are 16 computers available to students to type papers or research on the internet.

    The course may be taken four times for credit for a maximum of 3 units.
