Academic Study Skills for the Student-Athlete

 

Purpose:

This class is designed to assist the student-athlete in acquiring basic study skills and work habits to gain success in the classroom. The class is held in SG 144 and students have options for enrollment depending on their academic load.

 

Students can enroll in .5 unit and would be required to complete 27 hours in the lab, which averages one hour and forty minutes (1:40) per week for the semester. Students can enroll in 1 unit and would be required to complete 54 hours in the lab, which averages three hours and thirty minutes (3:30) per week for the semester. Finally, third year students can enroll in HS 1000 which is a zero unit class, and log time as needed.

 

This class is a requirement for all student-athletes each semester. It is a credit/ no credit class. It does not apply to an AA degree. Students must enroll in a specific class section. Orientation begins the first week of the semester.

   

Additional Information:

The class is a lecture /lab course that will address important topics as etiquette in the classroom, time/stress management, college services, critical thinking, test-taking strategies, and library research as well as other topics.  Two grade checks will be completed and students will see the academic counselor to update their Education Plan every semester.

 

In Sport 90, students are given daily reminders of important deadlines that apply to them such as Financial Aid dates, AA application deadlines, Four Year College Transfer application deadlines, Scholarship deadlines and enrollment appointment dates. Sport 90 will also provide study groups and tutoring to students in English and Math.

 

Typically each semester, the lab in SG 144 is open from approximately 7:30 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Thursday for students to complete their hours. The lab is also open Friday mornings.

 

There are fourteen computers available to students to type papers or research on the internet, as well as five study tables. The lab holds approximately forty students when full.  The course may be taken four times for credit for a maximum of 3 units.
