The SCC Matriculation Process in Five StepsDivider

Bullet Application

All Los Rios Colleges: American River, Cosumnes River, Sacramento City and Folsom Lake use the same application. By submitting the application, you can enroll in classes at any of our colleges. International Students (F/M/J student status) have college specific requirements and may apply online, but additional information is required before final SCC admission is approved.

Bullet Assessment is an evaluation process that:

  • Will reflect your level of performance in reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Will show educational strengths and needs and can provide useful information for planning a course of study at Sacramento City College.
  • Will be needed by a counselor when helping you develop an academic plan.

(This component is complete once you take the Assessment and have your results.)

Bullet Orientation is designed to inform you about:

  • Sacramento City College policies and procedures.
  • Support services available to students.
  • Rights and responsibilities - yours and the College's.
  • Preparation for counseling appointment.

(This component is complete once you have completed the PRACTICE EXERCISES and submitted them.)

Orientation Office: Rodda North Room 138 (916) 558-2145

Bullet Counseling will help you:

  • Clarify and establish appropriate career and educational goals.
  • Develop a Counselor Approved Planner (CAP)
  • Resolve personal or academic issues that may impact your academic success.
  • Counselors are available on a drop-in basis.

Bullet Registration can occur after meeting with a counselor to develop a Counselor Approved Planner (CAP).

Important Information to Understand Before You Register
Divider

Bullet The Student Educational Plan (SEP): Students should meet with a counselor each semester. Midway through a student's first semester a student should see a counselor to create a Student Educational Plan (SEP).

  • The SEP is a worksheet which reflects all the courses you need to complete in order to reach your academic goal.
  • The SEP is developed by you and a counselor.

To begin the SEP process:

  • Meet with a counselor
  • Bring your assessment results
  • Bring an unofficial copy of your transcript if you have previously completed college work

Sacramento City College Graduation Requirements

  • Completion of 60 semester units, including general education and major requirements, with a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • Completion of at least 12 of the 60 units from Sacramento City College.
  • Completion of the English, Reading and Math proficiency requirements.

For a listing of all of the degree and certificate programs available and a complete description of their requirements, please see the SCC College Catalog.

Choosing a General Education (GE) Pattern

General Education (GE) is a broad base of education where students study subjects from a wide array of knowledge. These subjects include courses in science, social science, history, English, math, and arts/humanities. In order to earn a college degree, it's necessary to complete one pattern of General Education.

Students choose a pattern of General Education among the three possible choices based on their goals:

Associate of Arts/Science General Education - leads towards an AA or AS degree.

California State University General Education (CSU) - leads towards a Bachelors degree at CSU.

Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) - leads toward a Bachelors degree at either the University of California (UC) or CSU.

PRACTICE EXERCISE #1:
Divider

1a. Look at the AA/AS pattern, what area does ASTR (Astronomy) 310 fall under?
1b. Look at the CSU pattern
, what area does JAPAN 401 fall under?
1c. Look at the IGETC pattern, what area does ECON (Economics) 310 fall under?

PRACTICE EXERCISE #2:
Divider

2a. Look at your Assessment Results and type in the English, Reading, and Math placements in the spaces provided:

Math
ESL
English
Reading
Example
Math 100
ESL 50
EngWr 40
EngRd 10
OR

By looking at the Class Schedule you will be able to tell to whether your course is acceptable for credit in an AA/AS pattern and whether it is transferable to a four year University. Here is an example of a course that is both General Ed applicable and transferable:

ENGWR 300 College Composition 3 Units
Prerequisite: Eligibility is determined by the assessment process or completion of ENGWR 100 with a grade of "C" or better.
Advisory: Concurrent enrollment in ENGLB 54 for some students; completion of ENGRD 310.
General Education: AA/AS Area D1 and writing competency
Course Transferable to UC/CSU
Hours: 54 hours LEC

If these comments do not appear you can usually assume the class does not fulfill a General Ed requirement for an AA/AS area and is not transferable.

Look at this course description for Math 100.
MATH 100 Elementary Algebra 5 Units
Formerly: MATH 51
Prerequisite: MATH 34 (or MATH 30 at CRC) with a grade of "C" or better, or eligibility as determined by the assessment process.
General Education: AA/AS Area D2 and mathematics competency
Hours: 90 hours LEC

2b. Does the class satisfy a GE area?

2c. Is it a transferable class?

Class Selection
Divider

When choosing your classes, keep these factors in mind:

  • Full-time is 12 semester units, which equals 12 hours of class per week and 12 to 24 hours of study time per week.
  • Look at other activities and commitments you have, i.e. family and work, to help you determine how much time you can devote to school.
  • Consider enrolling in Human Career Development (HCD) 310 "College Success" during your first year of college. The course teaches study skills, critical thinking, time management, education and career planning.

What are Prerequisites, Corequisites, and Advisories?

Sacramento City College uses prerequisites, corequisites and advisories to guide students into courses in which they will have the greatest opportunity for academic success. Let's define these terms so that you can understand how to use them.

  • A "Prerequisite" is a course or skill level that a student must meet prior to enrolling in a course or program.
  • A "Corequisite" is a course that a student is required to enroll in at the same time as enrolling in another course.
  • An "Advisory" is a suggested, but not required course or skill level that a student is advised to meet prior to enrolling in a course or program.

Prerequisite Challenge Procedure for Students

You can challenge a prerequisite through the academic department by obtaining a Prerequisite Challenge Form if you feel one of the following conditions exists:

  1. You have knowledge or ability to succeed in the course without the prerequisite. You must demonstrate to the department faculty to their satisfaction that this is true.
  2. You believe that the prerequisite is discriminatory or being applied in that manner. You must demonstrate how this is true.
  3. The course which provides the prerequisite is not readily available.

Once you have completed the challenge procedure, the faculty will review your challenge evidence. You will be informed in writing of the faculty's determination within five days. You may attend class during the five days you are waiting for the determination.

Dropping Courses
Divider

Remember, it is your responsibility to inform the school when you are dropping classes. Six, nine and eighteen weeks classes have different drop deadlines. Check the College Calendar and Schedule of Classes for the appropriate drop deadlines. You do not need the instructor's signature to drop a class, and it's easy to drop online or by phone.

If you merely stop attending classes, you risk receiving failing or incomplete grades. Many students find themselves on probation because they did not drop their classes on time. Be aware of the deadlines and protect your grades and grade point average (GPA).

You can find the important Start and End Dates, Drop/Add dates online under the Academic Calendar or in the printed class schedule. There you will find a chart similar to this one.
