There are three major programs in Northern California that offer students an opportunity for training and/or a degree in the library field:  Sacramento City College, California State University Sacramento and San Jose State University.


Sacramento City College

Degree/Certificate/Credential
  • Associate in Science in Library and Information Technology
  • Career Certificate in Library and Information Technology

Audience

  • Those interested in working in a library in a paraprofessional positions.
  • Those interested in exploring a career in Library and Information Science.

Requirements

  • 21-22 semester units
  • Courses are taught in the evening and weekends.

Enrollment

  • Students may enroll in the program in either fall or spring semester.  (Note: if a student wishes to complete the program in 2 semesters, they must start their coursework in the fall.  This option is not available every year.)

  • 2-4 semesters

California State University Sacramento

Degree/Certificate/Credential
  • Library Media Teacher Services Credential

Audience

  • Credentialed teachers wanting to teach in a library setting.
  • Public or state librarians desiring a school library position.
  • School library employees holding emergency credentials.

Requirements

  • 11 required courses - 31 total unites of graduate level academic credit.
  • Courses are offered on Friday evenings and Saturdays.
  • Each course is offered once over a 12 month period.
  • Prerequisites: California Basic Teaching Credential, CBEST

Enrollment

  • Students must apply for admission with CSUS during the Spring semester in order to start in August

Completion Time 

  • 12 consecutive months, beginning in August (student must commit to completion of the program within 12 months).

San Jose State University

Degree/Certificate/Credential
  • Credential, California Library Media Teacher Services
  • MLIS, Master of Library and Information Science

Audience

  • Those who wish to obtain a Master of Library and Information Science.  You must have this degree to work as a professional librarian

Requirements

  • 42 semester units
  • Entrance Requirements
    • B.A. or B.S. degree from a regionally accredited institution in any discipline.
    • 3.0 minimum GPA on the most recent 60 semester unites (or 90 quarter units) of coursework.  
    • Applicants with a GPA of 2.8-2.99 will be considered on a space available basis.  These applicants must submit GRE scores of at least 1000 including a minimum of 550 on the verbal, plus 3.5 or higher (scale of 0-6.0) on the Analytical Writing Section of the General Test.

Enrollment

  • Students may apply for the fall or spring semesters.

Completion Time 

  • Because most of the students in the program also have full-time jobs, the completion time varies.
