Adaptive Technology:
The LRC offers two adaptive work stations equipped with Kurzweil, Jaws and
Dragon Naturally Speaking software. The second floor also has a magnifier
to assist vision-impaired patrons.
Computer Access:
There are computers on the first and second floor of the LRC for use by patrons
and by members of the community. The computers on the second floor are provided
primarily for the research needs of SCC students. They can be used to search
the library catalog and electronic databases or to access the Internet. There
are, however, no word-processing applications on these computers. The computers
on the first floor in Instructional Media provide all of the library applications
as well as word-processing. Fee-based printing is
available from all of the computers.

Electronic Databases:
The library subscribes to several electronic research databases (much in full-text)
from a variety of sources. The databases can be accessed from any computer
with Internet access. Patrons who wish to access the databases remotely first
must establish a PIN.
Electronic Reserves:
Patrons who have established a PIN for their library account may access some
of their course readings through the LOIS library catalog. Adobe
Acrobat Reader is required to view items in PDF format. We cannot provide
everything electronically, so you will need to check the catalog for your
course to see what is available online. To check for electronic resources,
look in LOIS for your course either
by course name or instructor name. If any of items show the phrase “Click
on Title for Electronic Copy” then click on the title. You will be asked for
your library card barcode number and PIN before the document opens. For more
information, refer to the FAQs.

Instructional Media:
Located on the first floor of the LRC, Instructional Media houses all of the
non-print materials owned by the library. Videocassettes (including taped
televised courses) may be viewed on the premises. Audio tapes for foreign
language students may be dubbed here. In addition, there are computers available
loaded with all of the library applications; word processing applications
and software required by certain classes at SCC.
Interlibrary Loan:
Patrons who have established a PIN
for their library account may request that any circulating item available
at one of the other Los Rios campus libraries be sent to SCC. The patron may
then check out that item for the normal circulating period, usually 3 weeks.
For books that are not available in the Los Rios Community College District, the library staff must place an interlibrary loan request with another library. The originating library determines the shipping and handling charges as well as the loan period. Please contact the Circulation Desk (558-2301) with as much identifying information as possible (ILL form) when you place your request. Interlibrary loan forms are also available on the second floor of the Learning Resource Center at the Circulation Desk.
Library Catalog (LOIS): Patrons can access the catalog from campus or remotely. By establishing a PIN, patrons can request books from other Los Rios libraries, place holds on books currently checked out (except for Reserve books), renew the books they have checked out (one time only online) and access the electronic databases from remote locations.
Printing/Photocopying:
Printing at SCC is available from all computer stations on a pay-per-print
basis. Patrons must obtain a print card (debit card) in order to retrieve
printed items. Print cards may also be used in the copy machines located in
the LRC.
Reference:
The reference desk is located on the second floor of the LRC. It is staffed
with librarians who can offer assistance in locating specific information
or with any step of the research process.
Reserve Collection:
The Reserve collection is located behind the Circulation desk on the second
floor. The materials in this collection (textbooks, supplementary readings
and other materials made available by the instructor) can be checked out for
a limited time – 2 hours, 1 day or 1 week.
Special Collections/Archives:
Sacramento City College was established in 1916. The college’s rich history
is preserved in the Special Collections Room on the 3rd floor of the Learning
Resource Center.
The collections consist of The Express (school newspaper) 1922-present, The
Pioneer (yearbook) 1923-1980, college catalogues 1922-present. Photographs,
oral history tapes and newsclippings that reflect events and trends that
shaped Sacramento City College are also available for use in the Special
Collections Room.
To research in the Special Collections please call (916) 558-2532 for an
appointment.
Hours: Wednesdays & Thursdays 7:30-2:30.
