What Have You Learned?

We've covered a lot of information in this orientation that should help you do better research on the Internet.
Before you take the quiz that will allow you to get credit for this orientation, let's take a quick look at some of the information you should know.

Better Internet Research
Is quantity or quality more important when you're doing Internet research?

Search Engines
What are search engines?  Do they search the whole Internet?  Are all search engines the same?  What techniques might you use to narrow down your search in a search engine?

Subject Directories
How are subject directories different than search engines?  Which of these types of search tools is a more efficient way to find better quality information?  Why?

Website Evaluation
Why is it important to evaluate the information on the Internet?  What are the criteria you can use to evaluate websites?  Remember the www.martinlutherking.org example.

URLs
What is a top-level domain and why is it important?

Wikipedia
Why do you need to be careful about using Wikipedia?  Should you cite Wikipedia in a paper that you write?

Library Databases
Why are the library databases the best place to start your research?

Are you ready for the final quiz?

If you've paid attention, you should be able to complete the quiz with little difficulty. You may refer to the orientation when you are answering the quiz questions.

Open the quiz (PDF file). You may print the quiz out and submit it in person at the library.

**Online submissions are now closed for the semester. To submit the quiz, visit the reference desk on the 2nd floor of the Learning Resource Center. If you successfully complete the quiz with no more than 3 incorrect answers, you will receive a paper proof of completion that you can give to your instructor.**

Questions? Call the Reference Desk at (916) 558-2461.
