Become a Tutor

Peer Tutors

Peer tutors are SCC students who:

  • Have taken the courses they tutor.
  • Are recommended by their instructors.
  • Are trained in effective tutoring techniques.

How to Become a Tutor

SCC students interested in tutoring in the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center must complete a tutor application (part 1 and part 2). These applications are PDF files which require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat , you will need to download it.) After completing these forms, the applicant will be interviewed by the tutorial staff. All tutors are required to take a one-unit tutor training course, Human Services 370. Tutors can choose to earn units, be paid $7.00 per hour, or volunteer. Paid tutors on the average work between 5 and 10 hours per week; they cannot exceed 20 hours per week.

Tutor Qualifications

  • Grade of A or B in the course being tutored.
  • Enthusiasm for the subject matter.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Interest in helping others.
  • Dependability.

Tutoring Resources in the Center

  • Study rooms with white boards are available for group tutoring.
  • Small tables are also available for one-to-one tutoring.
