What you need to know about Grants?

Board of Governors Enrollment Fee Waiver (BOG fee waiver) - Students attending California Community Colleges pay an enrollment fee for classes, don't let this stop you from attending college. The great news for California residents is you may be eligible for a Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOG fee waiver), which waives the fee for eligible students. Each year more than half of our students qualify for a BOG fee waiver, and even more may be eligible. The BOG fee waiver pays enrollment fees for summer, fall and spring semesters, and only one more application per year is required.

Board of Governors Enrollment Fee Waiver is based on any of the following methods:

Method A

To be eligible a student must:

  • Be a California resident for tuition purposes as of August 14, 2006.
  • At the time of enrollment be a recipient of TANF (Temporary Aid to Needy Families formerly AFDC) or SSI/SSP (Supplemental Security Income/State Supplementary Program) or General Assistance/General Relief.

Method B

To be eligible a student must:

  • Be a California resident for tuition purposes as of August 14, 2006.
  • Complete BOG fee waiver application and provide a parent or student signed statement, under penalty of perjury; that income information provided is true. Be totally family income eligible. (copy of federal tax form may be required.)

Method C

To be eligible a student must:

  • Be a California resident for tuition purposes as of August 14, 2007.
  • Shows atleast $1.00 in financial aid need for Fall 2007 and/or Spring 2008 by completing the FAFSA.

Cal Grant B - Cal Grant B provides a living allowance for very low- income students. More than half of all new Cal Grant B recipients begin at a community college. The Cal Grant B award for first-year students is usually limited to living expenses, books, supplies, and transportation. When renewed, a Cal Grant B may also cover all or port of your tuition and fees. The maximum living allowance has been $1,551. The tuition and fee awards are the same as those for Cal Grant A, but award has to be claim at a four-year university.

Cal Grant C - Cal Grant C helps vocational students with tuition and training costs. The maximum award has been $576 for tools, books, and equipment.

Federal Pell Grants - This grant is awarded based solely on demonstrated of financial need to every undergraduate student who qualifies for the 2007-2008 school year. The awards range from $400 to $4176. For repayment information, click on Repayment

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) - Campus-based funds are awarded by the school. SEOG is a grant available for undergraduates only; awards range from $150 to $600. For repayment information, click on Repayment

Federal Work-Study - In a work-study program, money earned from employment arranged by the school is used to help with educational costs. Jobs are provided on and off campus, with hourly wages paid directly to the student to help with educational expenses. 

NEW!  - Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) - is a new federal grant for students entering college who have completed a rigorous high school curriculum.

  • Maximum $750 first year award
  • Maximum $1300 second year award
    • The amount of an award of ACG may be affected by other aid for which a student is eligible (e.g. Pell, State University Grant, Cal Grant)
  • Must have completed a "rigorous" high school curriculum with passing grades
    • Curriculum is defined as: 4 years of English; 3 years of Math (must include Algebra and Geometry), 3 years of science, 3 years of social studies, and 1 year of a foreign language
  • Must have completed secondary school after January 1, 2006 for 1st year of eligibility or January 1, 2005 for 2nd year of eligibility
  • Must be a citizen of the United States (permanent residents are not eligible even though they may be eligible for Pell and other Title IV funds)
  • Be enrolled or accepted for full-time enrollment (at least 12 units) in an undergraduate program leading to a degree
  • Must be Pell eligible based upon information provided on the annual FAFSA form
  • After award of the 1st Freshman grant, must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to retain the grant
  • Only one ACG grant for an academic year for a grade level (i.e. Freshman and Sophomore)
    • Freshman is defined as 0 - 29.9 units
    • Sophomore is defined as 30 - 59.9 units
