The last day of autumn is just around the corner, bringing cooler temperatures to California’s capital city. Students seeking to improve their fitness levels this winter might be wise to consider boxing, advises instructor Jerry Sullivan.
“It’s an excellent class for physical fitness and learning to defend yourself,” says Sullivan. “Boxing has been a long time activity offered here at City College.”
Beginning boxing doesn’t utilize any heavy equipment or speed bags, focusing instead on teaching the students basic skills. Sullivan says he tries to treat each student as a developing boxer in training for a full spar fight. By semester’s end, beginning boxers compete
against other students, giving them experience and increasing their confidence.
“I have a lot of students that re-take the class because they love it and they want to
get better,” adds Sullivan. “The students have a real feel feeling of accomplishment. It’s a popular class.”
