I
I haven't seen or thought about Goldilocks and the Three Bears since Daddy Bush was in the White House, and I was still learning to tie my shoelaces. However, when I attended a play based on the story at City College’s Storytime Theatre, I still knew all the words and I found it immensely entertaining.
They added a few extra characters to the story to make it more exciting and more original. One of these extras was the Big Bad Wolf, played superbly by Katie Murphy. The wolf was lost in the wrong fairy tale and eventually ended up being the master of ceremonies for the show.
Another addition to the traditional cast was a small group of animals that spent the play attempting to warn Goldilocks about the bears. The stand-out was the wisecracking, George Burnsesque, Funny Bunny. Throughout the play Funny Bunny kept her two friends from being scared by giving them a taste of the humor she was named for.
As far as the meat of the story went – the part that we all know – there are a few modern twists, like when Goldilocks runs away after getting in trouble for charging Jonas Brothers tickets to her father's "American Excess" card.
Aside from all the new additions, it was still the same story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and I completely enjoyed it. The performance I saw was also translated live into sign language, as will all the remaining Sunday show.
After the lights went on, the kids were allowed to go meet the cast, and after a few minutes hesitation they began hugging the characters and asking them questions.
Murphy, said that she is having a lot of fun with the part and enjoyed making the children happy.
"Tonight was probably the best show," Murphy said. "It's the first night no kid has cried."
