More than 500 guests turned out to help Sacramento City College celebrate its 90th birthday. The April bash featured a silent art auction, a shrimp cook-off, foods from around the world and a free PT Cruiser for one lucky raffle ticket holder.
The event showcased the college's history with a video documentary and speakers, and KOVR Channel 13's Lisa Gonzales served as Master of Ceremonies.
The shrimp cook-off featured chefs from The Kitchen, Waterboy, Mulvaney's B&L, Masons, and Tuli Bistro, which was voted number one in a good-natured contest that allowed guests to sample a variety of shrimp dishes.
The event's keynote speaker, Associate Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, is an SCC alumna who graduated in 1978.
"My experiences here led to my interest in the law and my goal of law school," Cantil-Sakauye said in her remarks to the audience. "The students here were all ages and experiences, and my experience here as a student was richer than any other environment I could have been in at 18 years of age."
SCCF board members Marilyn Perry and Dan McCarty, right, were among the judges of the shrimp cook off. The winning chefs, center, prepared prosciutto-wrapped shrimp sautˇed in butter.

SCC Foundation Executive Director Mary Leland said that community members have strong loyalties to the college.
"The college has served the community for 90 years, and this event gave the community a chance to give back to the college," said Leland. "Monies raised from the event will serve students, faculty and academic departments at SCC."
