Myra Howard needed Sociology 301 to graduate from SCC. The sociology and social science student received financial aid, which covered a lot of essentials. Getting a book for her class, however, was one more expense to add to the long list of necessities.
The Textbook Nomination Fund was established by an SCC faculty member and is supplemented by generous donations. A student is nominated based on the relationship between the nominator and the student, and it is the nominator's responsibility to ensure that all other means of textbook acquisition have been exhausted, such as borrowing on-reserve books in the library. Prior to submitting a nomination form, nominators encourage students to access support services on campus, such as EOPS, CalWORKs, Veterans Affairs and Financial Aid.
For Howard and other students who have exhausted available aid during any given academic year, the textbook fund can bring relief.
"I needed the class, and the book fund was a huge blessing," said Howard.
