The SCC Foundation awarded $85,000 representing 240 donor scholarships during its annual scholarship ceremony in May. The awards, which are highly competitive, help students pay for fees, books and supplies toward their academic goals.
Dr. Franklin and Lily Chinn, with their scholarship recipient, Paul Wei-Luen Clerkin. The Chinn's established the Gallant J. Chinn Memorial in honor of Franklin Chinn's younger brother, who attended Sacramento Junior College.

Members of SCC's Emeriti Affiliates attended the EA spring luncheon to honor emeriti scholarship recipients. Pictured are SCC's Vice President of Instruction, Debbie Travis, left, recipient Manuel Cacho, and EA President Jean Smelser. Retired SCC staff members remain connected to SCC through participation in the group and in the SCC scholarship program. This year, 23 students received 25 EA scholarships. Livingston's Concrete Service, Inc in North Highlands contributed $2,100 to the Livingston's Concrete Service Scholarship to benefit students interested in the construction industry.
Stephen Maller gave $5,000 to the Yvonne Maller Fund, which was established to benefit SCC's Learning Resource Center. Yvonne Maller, who passed away in January, was the former dean of the LRC.
The Shakespeare Festival Fund received a gift from Joseph Goss in the amount of $3,300.
Sacramento Consolidated Charities gave $3,034.50 to the RISE Fund. RISE, which stands for Respect, Integrity, Self-Determination and Education, is a program originally designed to help students on academic probation, though any student may join. RISE students work with their peers in various college programs and clubs, embracing a concept of familia, or family, working to support each other. They receive tutoring, have a book lending library, computer access, and have opportunities to tour four-year universities.
The SCC International Studies Program received a gift of $5,700 from the Academy for Educational Development. The program offers a degree designed to facilitate students' successful transfer to B.A. programs and, in so doing, prepare them for advanced study in a variety of graduate programs. Areas of career opportunities for those in the field are Foreign Service, Governmental Relations, Public Affairs, International Trade or Civil Service.
Denise Johnson's contribution of $1,000 to the Anatomy & Physiology Scholarship will help biology and nursing students who meet the award's requirements and have an interest in anatomy and physiology. Johnson is an SCC biology professor.
