ECE 1

Introduction to Early Childhood Education - 1 UNIT

ECE 2

The Child Development Associate Portfolio - 1 UNIT
Prerequisites: College level reading and/or writing skills advised.

Introducing the Child Development Associate Credential, the portfolio requirements, methods of assessment based on competencies, and assessing individual needs for further training.

ECE 3

Principles of Early Childhood Education - 1 UNIT
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade of "C" or better is advised.

This course will provide an overview of the theory and practice of working with the young child. The history and philosophy of Early Childhood Education; observation and practice in schools for young children in techniques of working with children) observation, evaluation, and participation in programs in local preschools, school-age children's centers and child development centers will be stressed. The students will be assigned to the Campus Child Development Center or selected schools in the community for supervised laboratory experience. Two field trips are required. Evidence of a current TB skin test is required.

ECE 4

 Practices in Early Childhood Education - 4 units
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade o "C" or better is advised.

This course provides an in-depth study of the procedures, theory and practices for the education of the young child. A laboratory experience is required in selected public and private preschools, children's centers and child development centers. Individual conferences will be held with Early Childhood Education instructors throughout the semester. Students will be assigned to the campus child development cen ter or to selected schools in the community for supervised laboratory experiences. Evidence of a current TB skin test is required.

Administration of Child Development Centers 3 units
Prerequisites: Completion of Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade of "C" or better is advised.

This is an introductory course in the elements of program planning, budgeting, supervision, and personnel administration for schools and private centers serving children and families.

ECE 6

The Atypical Infant 3 units
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade of "C" or better is advised.

This course is designed to acquaint the student with the characteristics of the atypical infant, assessment procedures and techniques for intervention in the development area of sensory stimulation and integration, gross and fine motor control, cognition, language, social and self-help skills. The course will explore community services, agencies, career and vocational opportunities in fields related to the atypical infant medicine, nursing, physical therapy, special education, counseling, social work, institutional settings, and aide positions.

Infant Development and Care 3 units
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade of "C" or better is advised.

This course teaches the principles and philosophy of infant care for children up to three years of age. The course will include growth and development, health and nutritional needs,
social-emotional needs, cognitive-development, language development, development of a positive self-image, parent education, community resources, and cultural and ethnic differences. Students will be assigned to Campus Infant-Toddler Program or selected infant-toddler centers for supervised laboratory experience.

ECE 8

The Exceptional Child 3 Units
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade of "C" or better is advised.

This is an introduction to the characteristics, assessment techniques, curriculum design, community resources and current issues of exceptional children. Observations in public or private school classrooms and agencies will be arranged. Two field trips are required.

ECE 9 

Programs for the School Age Child 3 units
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade of "C" or better is advised.

This course provides the fundamentals of planning, implementing and evaluating programs for before and after school care of school-age children (K-6). Emphasis will be on the development levels, age-appropriate activities and day-to-day program operations.

ECE 10

Introduction to Teaching Assisting - 3 Units
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 with a grade of "C" or better is advised.

This course will provide an overview of the principles and philosophy roles and responsibilities of teachers aid programs; growth and development of school-age children; techniques in working with children, parents, and the community; theories of learning; overview of the school, staff relations, ethics; and the exploration of specific subject areas.

ECE 12

Techniques of Behavioral Observation - 1 Unit
Prerequisites: College level reading and/or writing skills advised.
Acceptable for credit: CSU

This course will focus on the development of objectivity and proficiency in observing and interpreting child behavior. Observations in selected community preschools and child development centers will be required.

ECE 13 

Health and Safety in Child Care Settings 1 unit
(See Health Education 13)
Prerequisites: Eligibility for English 57 or 4 is advised.
Acceptable for credit: CSU

This course will discuss health and safety issues in child care centers and family day care homes. Topics include pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation, pediatric first aid, and preventative health practices such as control of infectious diseases, injury prevention, nutrition, sanitation, emergency preparedness and evacuation. This course meets requirements of Assembly Bill 962 for child care providers.

ECE 14

Children's Nutrition, Health, & Safety 3 units

Advisory: Eligibility for English 57 or 71 and Mathematics 220.

This course is designed to look at basic nutrition, health, and safety needs of children from the prenatal period through school age. Students will identify the nutrients in foods as they affect a child's physical and mental development. The course places emphasis on maintaining the optimal health, safety, and nutritional status of children at home and in group care. Projects relating to children's nutrition, health, and safety are required as part of the course. (Students may receive credit for FCS 14 or ECE 14, but not both.)

ECE 15 

Coordination and Supervision of Child Development Programs - 3 units
Prerequisites: Family and Consumer Science 34 or Early Childhood Education 3, 5 or one year of successful experience as a teacher of preschool children or the equivalent is advised.  3 units.

This is an advanced course in administration and coordination of multi-faceted Child Development programs. The emphasis of the course will be public funded programs and personnel management. This course meets the requirements of the Education Code under Title V, and the Commission for Teacher Credentialing.

ECE 16 

Activities for the Child Six to Twelve Years 3 units

Study of activities enjoyed by and valuable to the child of 6 to 12 years at home or in a group care situation before and after school.

Art in Early Childhood 3 units

A study of art activities with demonstrations and laboratory experiences appropriate to and correlated with growth and development patterns of the child to age eight.

Music for Children - 3 units

This course provides the basic fundamentals of music designed for preschool and child development center teachers. Skills in performing rhythms and songs and an introduction to the autoharp. Development of an understanding of music from children of all cultures is included.

Principles of Pre-School Skill Building 3 Units

Planning play environments for young children to enrich children's experience and to foster child-child and adult child interaction. Analyzing the use of physical space in early childhood settings in terms of program philosophy and goals. Developing interest centers to facilitate children's development through the use of blocks, dramatic play, and mud, sand, and water.

ECE 21

The Effective Parent-Teacher 3 Units
Prerequisites: College level reading and/or writing skills advised.

This course will present material and learning experiences that assist parents and teachers in developing skills in areas of discipline and behavior with young children. Alternative approaches to handling behavior problems will be reviewed and discussed.

Interaction of Parents and Teachers of Young Children 3 Units

Philosophy of parent involvement and participation in preschools; requirements in various types of programs; typical patterns of child rearing; changing life styles of families; school as a laboratory for parents; organization of parent groups, parent education classes, the teacher's role as helper, identification of community assistance resources.

Child Development - 3 units

This course will examine the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth and development of children from prenatal period through adolescence and the children as individuals and their needs in the modern world. Problems of interest to pre-teaching, pre-nursing, home economics majors, and other students interested in child development are discussed. (CAN H EC 14)

FCS 35 

The Child, The Family and The Community - 3 units

The child in the family and community. Influences on growth and development including social class, racial/ethnic groups, and their relationship to family behavior, interaction of family members, and the effect of community activities and resources on family life. (Credit for FCS 35 or Sociology 4, but not for both.)

ECE 36

Culture and Diversity in Early Childhood Education 3 units
Prerequisites: Eligibility for English 57 is advised. Family and Consumer Science 34 is advised.

This course covers culturally responsive care and education in early childhood settings. It includes the study of childrearing and communication styles as they vary across the diverse cultures represented in the classroom and as they impact a child's development. Teaching strategies which prevent and eliminate the development of prejudice and racism in growing children will also be covered.

ECE 47

Adult Supervision: 2 units
Mentoring in a Collaborative Learning Setting
Prerequisites: None.

This course is a study of the methods and principles of the collaborative learning approach with emphasis on supervising teachers in child care centers. Emphasis is on the role of a mentor who functions to guide the teaching team while simultaneously addressing the needs of children, parents and their staff. This course satisfies the adult supervision requirement for receiving a supervising teacher permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

ECE 48

Early Childhood Education Work Experience 1-4 Units
Prerequisites: College level reading and/or writing skills advised.
Employment in a position related to Early Childhood Education and enrollment in a minimum of 7 units including Work Experience.
Acceptable for credit: CSU
18 hours lecture and 75 hours of related, paid work experience or 60 hours of volunteer work experience for one unit; 75 or 60 hours of related work experience for each additional unit.
Supervised work experience in infant, preschool and school age child care centers. Students may be placed in infant centers, public or private child development centers/preschools
and in before or after school programs for school age children. Enrollment is dependent on job placement and registration for the course will be processed at the time of employment.
Job placement is not guaranteed but assistance is provided by the coordinator. May be repeated for maximum of eight units.

Parenting Issues: Preschool 1-1-1-1 unit
Prerequisites: College level reading and/or writing skills advised.

This course is designed for student-parents who have children enrolled in the Campus Preschool Center Program and other interested students. The course will focus on relevant parenting issues. May be repeated four times for credit providing there is no duplication of topics.

Parenting Issues: Infant Toddlers 1-1-1-1 unit
Prerequisites: College level reading or writing skills advised.

This course is designed for student-parents who have children enrolled in the Infant/Toddler Center and other interested students. The course will focus on the current issues of parenting infant/toddlers. May be repeated four times for credit providing there is no duplication of topics.

ECE 52

Special Topics .5 - 4 units

Prerequisites: College level reading and/or writing skills advised.
18 hours lecture or 54 hours laboratory for each unit of credit
Designed to give students an opportunity to study topics in Early Childhood Education which are consumer or job oriented and not included in current offerings. May be repeated for credit providing there is no duplication of topics.

ECE 90

Parenting Through Participation 1-1-1-1 unit
Prerequisites: Student-parent of child enrolled in Infant Toddler Center.
Advised: Early Childhood Education 51.
9 hours lecture, 54 hours laboratory
This course is designed for student-parents who have their children enrolled in the Infant/Toddler Center. The course will focus on basic parenting skills through weekly participation at the Center and group seminars. This course may be repeated for a maximum of four units.
