Web Guidelines

Procedures & Technical Guidelines

All pages division level and above are considered institutional pages. The Public Information Office will be responsible for their design and upkeep. Information on these pages comes mainly from institutional publications, such as the Catalog, Student Guide, recruitment publications, schedule, campus calendar and phone book. The comments link goes to the Public Information Office. It is the duty and responsibility of the Public Information Office to review comments and ensure that institutional pages are kept current and accurate.

• Some of the information on institutional pages has gone through a campus, District, state or federal approval process. Requests to change or update this information should be sent to the Public Information Office to be forwarded through the appropriate channels before making changes on the Web.

• Instructor pages should have return links to department, division and/or college home page.

• Department home pages should say Sacramento City College in the title and on the page itself. They should have an email contact for the department chair, links to faculty who have Web pages and a return to home page for the college. Programs may link to the institutional Programs of Study listing. When appropriate, create links for additional information to institutional pages such as maps, telephone numbers, schedules, programs of study, certificates of completion and career certificates.

• Faculty may request the Public Information Office to link their Web page to their phone number. There are several benefits to this: When faculty are separated from the college, their pages are automatically removed when the phonebook is updated. Linking Web pages to phone numbers gives students immediate access to faculty.

• Web page authors are responsible for keeping pages accurate and current and hypertext links updated. Web pages should include a contact name with email address and the date last updated. Outdated or inaccurate pages may be unlinked if changes are not made after notification.

• Sacramento City College Web pages may be automatically programmed to indicate date last modified. This is already in place on institutional pages. Web authors may choose to have this feature added to their pages.

• Faculty advisors of student clubs or organizations will be responsible for ensuring that club Web pages meet campus guidelines. Faculty and staff posting student Web pages on the server will be responsible for ensuring that Web pages meet campus guidelines.

• Requests to link faculty Web pages designed by students must include the name of the faculty or staff authorized to supervise the work. Requests should also indicate the name of the person responsible for updating the information after the student leaves.

Technical Guidelines

• Use all lower case letters in file names. File or directory names must not include a space or an apostrophe and can only include letters, numbers, underscore_ and dash-.

• The first page to load in any directory must be called index.html. This allows the browser to automatically open that page.

• Please include on each page:
• The words Sacramento City College. The SCC logo is optional.
• Web document titles should begin with SCC and name the page title so search engines may correctly identify pages.
• A meta tag to help our search engine locate your page. This should include: SCC, Sacramento City College, division, department or program name and key content words from the page.

• Graphics should be sized to fit your design before importing them into your Web page. It is recommended that the total size of all graphics on any one Web page should not exceed 60 – 70k.

• Pages should be designed to be accessible to people with disabilities, many of whom use text-based browsers. Faculty may contact Melissa Green for Web templates that meet ADA requirements.

• Design for the minimum screen size of 640 x 480 pixels. Please test for cross platform presentation. Make sure it is formatted correctly on both a PC and a MAC and in Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. You may check your pages in LR 110 and 111.

• It is recommended that you adopt principles of style as outlined in the WWW Style Guide (http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/manual/contents.html).

• SCC Web servers do not support CGI scripts for personal accounts at this time. If you are considering using scripting or FrontPage extensions, please consult campus webmasters.

• Copyright/legal issues and the Web are examined on AACC's Web site. Explore questions such as, What is intellectual property? Who owns an online course? Who owns the online course material? Included are reports and presentations, copyright resources on the Web, and existing college copyright policies. Visit http://www.aacc.nche.edu/copyright

As technology and software change, these guidelines will always continue to be amended subject to review by the Sacramento City College Information Technology Committee.
