SCC Associate Degree Nursing Extended Campus

What is the program and who is offering it?

The Sutter Center for Health Professions, Sacramento City College Associate Degree Nursing Program, Extended Campus (SCHP) is an accelerated Nursing Program, partially funded by Sutter Health and provided by the Los Rios Community College District and Sacramento City College. The goal of the program is to get more Registered Nurses into the local workforce, in order to alleviate the current nursing shortage. This is a grant funded program aimed at graduating over 400 Associate Degreed Nurses by Fall 2010.

Students eligible for the program will have completed all of their Prerequisite classes and will be ready to apply to the Sacramento City College Associate Degree Nursing program. Work in progress will not be accepted. Due to the accelerated pace of the program, it is highly recommended that students have also completed all co-requisite and General Education classes.

Students will need to submit an application packet. Applications will be screened for entry into the program. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Submission of an application does not constitute entry into the program. For upcoming application periods, please visit the following link:

How is the program accelerated?

Classes are offered on a 16-week year-round format. Students attend 16 weeks of class and have one week off between sessions. The only deviations from this format are 1) when the session break falls during the winter break and 2) spring break. When the session break falls during the winter break, classes resume after the first of the new year.

How long does the accelerated program take?

The four semesters of the accelerated program takes 16 months.

How long will this program be going on?

The Extended Campus Nursing Program is anticipated to continue through Fall 2010.

What are the costs involved? Is it really free?

Sutter Health has offered a generous grant to pay for the teaching facilities and for the enrollment fees for each student. Students are still responsible for all other costs, including uniforms, books, laboratory fees, malpractice insurance, physical exam, immunizations, an 8-panel drug screen, current CPR, law enforcement background check, equipment, transportation to off-campus laboratory locations. Start up costs for the Nursing Program are approximately $3,600, and include uniforms, malpractice insurance, and necessary equipment such as a stethoscope. Upon completion of the program, students will need to pay examination and licensure fees of approximately $400. Other costs may apply as well. If I have already turned in my application to Sacramento City College, do I still need to turn one in to the Sutter Center For Health Professions?

Yes.

Can I apply with my last few pre-requisites in progress?

No.

This means that you must have completed all your pre-requisites before you can apply. For example if you finish your pre-requisites during the Spring or Summer of 2008 you will be eligible to apply in Fall 2008 for a seat in Spring 2009.

You may apply if you are completing your co-requisite or general education requirements, but we highly recommend that they be completed prior to entry into the accelerated nursing program.

We encourage students with their last prerequisites in progress to continue checking this website for future application dates to the extended campus nursing program. That way when you are ready and have all your pre-requisite classes completed, you can obtain an application as quickly as possible.

What about pre-requisites taken at a community college other than a Los Rios college?

If a student has taken any pre-requisites at an accredited community college other than a Los Rios college, they are required to submit a course catalog description of the course from the year they took the course (or as close as they can come to that) along with their application. This would be in addition to official transcripts from that college.

Is there a recency requirement on the pre-requisites?

No. This means there are no time limits on the classes taken to satisfy the pre-requisite requirements.

What if I have already started a program at Sacramento City College?

Don't drop out of the program! Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region has endowed $200,000 in scholarships to the Los Rios Community College District. Scholarships will be available to students as early as the Fall 2003 semester and will reward students who show high academic achievement. If you are a current Sutter employee, check with your HR department on their tuition reimbursement policy.

Are students able to transfer into the Sutter Center for Health Professions/Sacramento City College program from another nursing program they already have in progress?

There are currently no provisions in the program to accommodate transfer students.

How will the students be selected for the Nursing program? Is this a lottery system?

The criteria for selection include GPA and number of times a student repeated the prerequisite Science classes in order to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in the Sciences. All applicants to the Sacramento City College Extended Campus Nursing Program at Sutter Center for Health Professions must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and submit results with completed application packets. The requested Instructor/Supervisor Checklist and handwritten essay (see below) will also have a bearing on acceptance into the program. It is not a random selection. Please visit the following link:

What is the TEAS test?

  • The test is a standardized test for pre nursing candidates in the areas of Reading, Mathematics, Science, English and language usage.
  • All applicants to the Sacramento City College Extended Campus Nursing Program at Sutter Center for Health Professions must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and submit results with completed application packets.

  • A minimum score of 67 is required in each section. If the cut score of 67 is not achieved in each of the areas on the first attempt, applicants may remediate and take the entire test a second time and pay another test fee. Retaking the test will depend on space availability. Spaces will be given to first-time testers first. All must be completed before applying to the nursing program. Instruction will be provided to applicants on the testing day for obtaining test results.

  • Test preparation materials may be obtained through the Assessment Technologies Institute at 800/667-7531 or by going directly to the Test of Academic Skills at www.atitesting.com.

  • If an applicant has already taken the TEAS test at another school and has achieved a passing score in each of the four areas, the results can be obtained through the ATI website and submitted with application packets.

What are the Instructor/Supervisor Checklist and handwritten essay?

The Instructor/Supervisor checklist must be completed by an instructor or work supervisor from within the last 3 years. The Checklist is a list of personal characteristics. The Instructor/Supervisor is asked to check the characteristics that apply to the applicant and provide comments, if applicable.

The essay is a one page hand written essay (not more than 500 words) on why you want to be a nurse.

Where are the classes being held?

The majority of the classes will be at the Sutter Center for Health Professions located at 2700 Gateway Oaks, Sacramento, 95833. Clinical rotations will occur at Sutter hospitals.
