SCC Associate Degree Nursing Extended Campus Selection Citeria

To assist applicants to Sacramento City College's Associate Degree Nursing Program EXTENDED CAMPUS, offered at the Sutter Center for Health Professions, listed below are the admission criteria used to select candidates.

Please note that the extended campus nursing program exists because of the financial support from the Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region (SHSSR), and will continue through the year 2010 in response to the nursing shortage crises in the greater Sacramento area. This response reflects a core value of the Sutter Health organization: to be actively involved in health-related activities in the communities served by the Sutter Health network throughout Northern California. By sponsoring this program, the SHSSR's overall goal is to benefit the community by graduating more registered nurses. Additionally, by paying the students' enrollment fees, the SHSSR is helping remove one of the financial barriers to individuals pursuing their dream of becoming a registered nurse. The application process is open to all qualified members of the greater Sacramento area. Our belief is the majority of graduates will stay in the Sacramento area, and therefore will benefit the community by helping decrease the nursing shortage impacting all the health systems in the region. For all of these reasons, being employed at a Sutter facility is not a criteria for admission.

Admission Criteria for Sacramento City College's Associate Degree Nursing Program Extended Campus at the Sutter Center for Health Profession:

  1. Cumulative GPA of > 3.0 in Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology

  2. Number of times Anatomy, Physiology and/or Microbiology are repeated to earn a passing grade

  3. Non-science prerequisite Cumulative GPA of > 3.0

  4. A score of 67% or higher in each area of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Please visit the Frequently Asked Questions link for further details.

  5. Experience in a paid healthcare position may be considered in the event of a tie.

  6. An Instructor/Supervisor Checklist (included in the application) must be completed and signed by an instructor or supevisor who has known the applicant within the last 3 years. The Checklist is a list of personal characteristics. The Instructor/Supervisor is asked to check the characteristics that apply to the applicant and provide comments, if applicable.

  7. A one page hand written essay (not more than 500 words) on why you want to be a nurse.

In the event of 2 or more candidates being equally qualified in the above criteria, total duration of healthcare experience in a paid position would be considered first, and if they are "alternate status" would be considered second.
