If you are offering a new class or adding a section, promote it (briefly!) when you record your telephone greeting. Messages should be no longer than 30 seconds. Change your greeting frequently. For example, start promoting second-nine week classes in your department about six weeks into the semester.

If you are going to be absent from the college for some time, e.g. faculty on summer or winter break, leave a greeting saying when you will return. If you will be checking for messages, let the caller know.
