HISTORY 4 3 units History of Western Civilization Advisory: English 57 or English as a Second Language 2W and 2R. Description: This is a study of Western Civilization from pre-historic times to the Renaissance. The focus of the course will be on the history of Europe, including a general account of those political, economic, and social institutions as well as the cultural and intellectual forces that help explain our present day civilization. The course includes the general study of the nature of history, prehistoric culture, the Ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Acceptable for credit: UC, CSU; IGETC 3B; CSU - GE C2 or D2 General Education: AA/AS Area B2 Hours: 54 hours lecture Description: A history of Western Civilization from the Ancient Near East until the Renaissance with emphasis on those social, economic, political, and cultural forces which help explain our present civilization with added emphasis on historiography, primary sources, historical interpretation, and the craft of writing history. This honors section uses an intensive instructional methodology designed to challenge motivated students.

Description: This course is a study of Western Civilization concentrating on the history of Europe. A general account of political, economic, and social institutions as well as the cultural and intellectual forces that help explain our present day civilization will be covered from High Renaissance to the present.

Acceptable for credit: UC, CSU; IGETC 3B; CSU - GE C2 or D2 General Education: AA/AS Area B2 Hours: 54 hours lecture Description : This course surveys women's contributions to the major ideas, institutions, and events of Western Civilization. Diversified roles of women are examined from antiquity to the present with emphasis on the interaction of the sexes. The effects on the society of the patriarchal structure of the family, and, consequently, the pervasive impact on all institutions of western culture is closely examined.

Description: This course provides a general historical survey of the Americas, North and South, from European discovery through the Wars of Independence.

Description: This course offers a general historical survey of the Americas, North and South, from national independence to the present day. Emphasis will be on modern day Latin American-United States relations.

Description: As a general history of Mexico from earliest times to the present, this course provides a comprehensive study of Indian-Mexico, the Spanish conquest, Colonial New Spain, War of Independence, Age of Santa Anna, Reign of Diaz, Revolution of 1910 and the reconstruction and Contemporary Mexico.

Description: This course surveys world history to 1500 with an emphasis on the dynamic interaction of cultures and peoples. The course will emphasize the role of social, political, economic, cultural and intellectual forces as they shape the major world civilizations. It will also focus on the legacy and contributions of these civilizations to our present cultures.

Description: This course is a survey of world civilizations from 1500 to the present, with particular emphasis on the dynamic interaction and comparison of peoples and cultures. The focus is on the role played by social, political, economic, cultural and intellectual forces in shaping the major world civilizations, the legacy of these civilizations and the ongoing tension between tradition and modernity.
HISTORY 14 3 units History of the United States: African-American Emphasis Advisory: English 57 or English as a Second Language 2W and 2R is advised. Acceptable for credit: UC, CSU; IGETC 4; CSU - GE D1 General Education: AA/AS Areas B1, F Hours: 54 hours lecture. Description: Covering the U.S. Constitution and founding of American governmental institutions, this course focuses on United States history from the establishment of the first New World colonies to the end of the Civil War. This course will pay particular attention to the ways in which black people have influenced the formation and development of this nation. This course will also examine the ways in which racial issues have shaped American society, culture, and politics. There will be no credit if preceded by History 16 or 17.

Acceptable for credit: UC, CSU; IGETC 4; CSU - GE D1 General Education: AA/AS Areas B1, F Hours: 54 hours lecture. Description: This course focuses on United States history from 1865 to Present, including coverage of state and local government, with an emphasis on the role of African-Americans. This course will pay close attention to the ways in which black people have shaped American society, culture, and politics. No credit if preceded by History 16 or 18.

History 16 is specially designed to meet the needs of transfer students other than social science majors. No credit if preceded by History 14, 15, 17, 18.

The course is not recommended for students who have completed History 16. It would benefit history students to register also for Library 15 for help with historical research projects.

Description: This course covers the development of American institutions and society hrough Reconstruction and partially fulfills American institutions requirements. The course emphasizes the role played by political, economic, social, cultural and intellectual forces on the culture and development of multiple ethnic groups in a comparative format. The class is conducted in a seminar format and requires that the student engage in the reading of at least four other major books besides the required text. This honors section uses an intensive instructional methodology and is designed to challenge motivated students. The course is not recommended for students who have completed History 16.

Description: This course offers an overview of the history of Africa and its culture from the earliest times to the present. The impact of Islam and Europe will be addressed with an emphasis on Africa south of the Sahara.

HISTORY 28 3 units Survey of California History: A Multicultural Perspective Advisory: English 57 or English as a Second Language 2W or 2R. Acceptable for credit: UC, CSU; CSU - GE D2 General Education: AA/AS Areas B2, F Hours: 54 hours lecture. Description: This course is a survey of the history of California with an emphasis on the state's multicultural society beginning with Native California cultures. The course considers the impact of Mexican, Asian, and African Americans as well as other groups within the context of economic, political, and cultural developments.
